The set up of Danpaati River Lodge and the accompanying Health Care project has strong international ties. Different (inter)national partners are working closely together on the project.

The umbrella organization for this cooperation is the Bonama Foundation, residing in Suriname. ‘Bonama’ means ‘We/Let’s do it together’. The Bonama Foundation is being supervised by a blend of Dutch and Surinamese managers and is responsible for the execution of the project.

The Bonama Foundation works with partners who contribute to realize its goals. These partners are not only local, but also foreign bodies in the fields of tourism, sustainable development and health care.

Sponsoring and Management

Menzis Care and Income, as well as Woonzorg Nederland are sponsors of the Bonama Foundation.

The Bonama Foundation management team is composed of representatives of the participating villages and of representatives of the sponsors. Sponsors in Holland are united in the Foundation for the Support of * Marrons in Suriname.

The local population has at least two members in the Bonama board team.

Our Mission

The aspirations of the Bonama Foundation are the development of health care in a community of the Saramaccan people in the Upper Suriname region. Initiatives to start minor projects must contribute to lasting, regional development.

This means:

  • Founding and maintenance of a professional health care organization in the region;
  • Making a direct link between sustainable tourism (Danpaati River Lodge), permanent commercial activities and the Health Care project that is focused on the improvement of the health care in this region;
  • Contributing to the protection of the tropical rain forest surrounding Danpaati River Lodge, by stressing its value and making it possible for tourists to enjoy all this;
  • Seeing to it that productive co-operation is established between the local community and the Bonama Foundation towards permanent development. This will be achieved by means of training, supervising and creating employment;
  • Offering a first-class firm with added value for tourists;
  • Transfer of the entire project towards a local management team in due time.
