Danpaati

Danpaati River Lodge is situated on an island in the Upper Suriname River, about 217 miles south of Paramaribo, Suriname’s capital city.

Danpaati is amid the tropical forest and surrounded by the untouched nature of the Amazon region and some small villages.

It’s possible to reach the lodge by means of transport by land or by air. It is not possible to guarantee a fixed time of departure and duration of the trip, since that depends on the weather and the condition of the roads leading through the jungle.

Transport by land

If you choose to travel by land, you will cover the first part of the journey by bus. During an approximately four-hour trip along the Afobaka Road – a road exposing the red color of bauxite that is stretched through the rain forest in pure nature, you’ll see the gradual change of environment coming from Paramaribo and moving into untouched countryside. Along the way you may prepare for the moment when you will have really entered the overwhelming jungle.

The trip by bus ends at Atjoni. This place marks the end of the Afobaka Road and is situated on the Upper Suriname River. You will get out of the bus and board a canoe with an out-board engine, awaiting you. This canoe is traditional and home-made, cut out of one huge tree and it will take you to our Lodge during an approximately three-hour trip on the river.

Along the way you’ll see several settlements, children playing along the banks of the river, birds flying around the canoe and maybe even spot birds of prey in the air.

Depending on the water level in the river it could be necessary for you to disembark the canoe, so that the boatmen will be able to pull the canoe across some rock formations.

Transport by air

If you choose to reach out Lodge by air, your point of departure is Zorg en Hoop airport. It is a small airport in Paramaribo at about a ten-minutes drive from downtown Paramaribo. All flights heading for Suriname’s interior depart from this airport. Depending on the number of passengers, your flight in a small plane will end on an airstrip in the Botopasi village.

You will have a bright view of Suriname’s jungle in all her unique forms during the flight. The city will be left behind within a few minutes and you’ll get the first glimpses of images from the Amazon forest. Wide, tea-colored rivers slowly meander towards their origins, meanwhile you’ll notice villages and farmlands of the native population.

After a safe landing at Botopasi, the final part of the trip will be continued in approximately fifteen minutes on the river, by canoe. A quarter of an hour later the Lodge manager will welcome you and you’ll enjoy a delicious cold drink to celebrate your arrival…
